With the jagged Dolomites crowding its southern skyline, the capital of East Tyrol is a scenic staging point for travels through the Hohe Tauern National Park.
A €36 day pass covers skiing on the nearby Zettersfeld and Hochsteinpeaks. However, the area is more renowned for its 100km of cross-country trails; the town fills up for the annual Dolomitenlauf cross-country skiing race in mid-January.
Schloss BruckCASTLE
Lienz' famous medieval fortress has a museum chronicling the region's history, as well as Roman artefacts, Gothic winged altars and local costumes. The castle tower is used for changing exhibitions; a highlight for art enthusiasts is the Egger-Lienz-Galerie devoted to the emotive works of Albin Egger-Lienz.
AguntumMUSEUM, RUINS
Excavations are still under way at the Aguntum archaeological site in nearby Dölsach to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of this 2000-year-oldmunicipium, which flourished as a centre of trade and commerce under Emperor Claudius. Take a stroll around the excavations, then visit the glass-walled museum to explore Lienz’ Roman roots.
