Germany : Würzburg

Tucked in among river valleys lined with vineyards, Würzburg beguiles long before you reach the city centre and is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. Its crowning architectural glory is the Residenz, one of the finest baroque structures in Germany and a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Festung MarienbergFORTRESS
Enjoy panoramic city and vineyard views from this hulking fortress, the construction of which was initiated around 1200 by the local prince-bishops who governed here until 1719. Dramatically illuminated at night, the structure was only penetrated once, by Swedish troops during the Thirty Yearsʼ War, in 1631. Inside, the Fürstenbaumuseum (closed November to mid-March) sheds light on its former residents' pompous lifestyle, while the Mainfränkisches Museum presents city history and works by local late-Gothic master carver Tilmann Riemenschneider and other famous artists.
The fortress is a 30-minute walk up the hill through the vineyards from the Alte Mainbrücke via the Tellsteige trail.
Dom St KilianCHURCH
Würzburg's freshly renovated Romanesque cathedral has impressive dimensions, an airy feel, and precious sculpture and tomb stones affixed to slender pillars. A highlight is the Schönbornkapelle by Balthasar Neumann.
