In Linz beginnt's (It begins in Linz) goes the Austrian saying, and it's spot on. The technology trailblazer and European Capital of Culture 2009 is blessed with a leading-edge cyber centre and world-class contemporary-art gallery.
Ars Electronica CenterMUSEUM
The technology, science and digital media of the future are in the spotlight at Linz' biggest crowd-puller, the Ars Electronica Center. In the labs you can interact with robots, animate digital objects, convert your name to DNA and (virtually) travel to outer space.
LentosGALLERY
Overlooking the Danube, the rectangular glass-and-steel Lentos is strikingly illuminated by night. The gallery guards one of Austria's finest modern-art collections, including works by Warhol, Schiele, Klimt, Kokoschka and Lovis Corinth, which sometimes feature in the large-scale exhibitions.
MariendomCATHEDRAL
Also known as the Neuer Dom, this neo-Gothic giant of a cathedral lifts your gaze to its riot of pinnacles, flying buttresses and filigree traceried windows.
PöstlingbergVIEWPOINT
Linz spreads out beneath you atop Pöstlingberg (537m). It’s a precipitous 30-minute ride aboard the narrow-gauge Pöstlingbergbahn from the Hauptplatz. This gondola features in theGuinness Book of World Records as the world’s steepest mountain railway – quite some feat for such a low-lying city!
AIR
Ryanair flies to the Blue Danube Airport, 13km southwest of Linz. An hourly shuttle bus (€2.90, 20 minutes) links the airport to the main train station.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Single bus and tram tickets cost €2, and day passes €4.
TRAIN
Linz is halfway between Salzburg and Vienna on the main road and rail routes. Trains to Salzburg (€25.30, 1¼ hours) and Vienna (€33.60, 1½ hours) leave at least twice hourly.
