With its captivating location on Wörthersee and more Renaissance than baroque beauty, Klagenfurt has a distinct Mediterranean feel. Carinthia's capital makes a handy base for exploring Wörthersee's lakeside villages and elegant medieval towns to the north.
Boating and swimming are usually possible from May to September.
WörtherseeLAKE
Owing to its thermal springs, the Wörthersee is one of the region's warmer lakes (an average 21°C in summer) and is great for swimming, lakeshore frolicking and water sports. The 50km cycle path around the lake is one of the 'Top 10' in Austria. In summer the tourist office cooperates with a hire company for bicycles (per day/week €11/45), which can be picked up and dropped off at points around the lake.
EuropaparkPARK
The green expanse and its Strandbad (beach) on the shores of the Wörthersee are centres for splashy fun, and especially good for kids. The park's biggest draw is Minimundus (www.minimundus.at), a 'miniature world' with 140 replicas of the world's architectural icons, downsized to a scale of 1:25. To get here, take bus 10, 11, 12 or 22 from Heiligengeistplatz.
AIR
Klagenfurt's airport is 3km north of town. The low-cost airline Germanwings flies to Vienna and Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne in Germany.
BUS
Bus drivers sell single tickets (€2.10) and 24-hour passes (€4.70). Bus 40/42 shuttles between the Hauptbahnhof and the airport.
TRAIN
Two hourly direct trains run from Klagenfurt to Vienna (€52, four hours) and Salzburg (€39, 3¼ hours). Trains to Graz depart every two to three hours (€40, three hours). Trains to western Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Germany go via Villach (€6.70, 24 to 37 minutes, two to four per hour).
